If your caravan windows have become scratched or damaged during the summer, then don’t leave the task of replacing them until spring.
Whilst winter might not seem like the best time to work on your caravan you can actually replace the windows at any time of the year - as long as you do it correctly. It’s easy enough to replace the windows yourself once you have a guide to follow, so read on to explore the process step-by-step.
Inspecting the windows
No matter how well you take care of your leisure vehicle, the simple fact is that we can’t control the elements. Even the most reliable windows can become damaged by intense storms or grit from the road, so the first step is to take a good look at the windows and find out which ones need replacing.
The most obvious reason to replace a window is if you can visibly see serious damage or breaks across the entire pane, but it is also a good idea to replace any double-glazed windows that let in moisture between the panes. This is particularly important during the winter, as the drop in temperature will easily freeze any moisture inside these cracks and lead to some surprise breakages when you next come to use your caravan.
Once you know which window, or windows, need replacing, the next step is to note down the exact measurements for the replacements you need, which you can then find in our full range. However, if you notice any minor surface damage that doesn’t affect the whole window then check out our guide to safely removing any scratches or hazing from acrylic windows without needing to replace them.
Replacing caravan windows
Installation techniques can vary depending on the make of your caravan and on the placement of the windows, so, make sure that you check the following techniques against the manufactures’ guidelines before installing the replacement caravan windows. We also always recommend that you do any work on a dry day or in a garage to stop the winter weather from getting in the way.
- Remove any screws, handles, and clips holding the window in place, but keep them to hand if you are not replacing them as they will hold the new window in place.
- Check your surroundings and then carefully remove the window, taking particular care when handling any smashed or severely damaged windows.
- Double check the measurements of the new window before placing it into the frame to check that it fits without having to force it.
- Secure the window in place with the fixings and add the seals back.
- Finish up by making sure that the window opens, closes, and locks, and doesn’t let in any moisture or drafts.

Protecting caravan and motorhome windows during winter
The cold weather doesn’t mean that you have to stop enjoying your caravan, motorhome or campervan. Whether your diary is already booked up with road trips, or you’re thinking about storing your leisure vehicle away, protect your windows all winter long using the following tips.
- Clean any dirt, grit or salt that has been blown onto the windows after the roads have been salted, taking care to only use a cleaner that has been designed for acrylic windows to prevent scratches.
- Avoid towing your caravan during high winds and take your awning down if the weather becomes too windy.
- Seals can crack in low temperatures, so keep an eye on the seals and address any cracks.
- Use dehumidifiers whilst the caravan is stationary to prevent condensation from causing frost on the windows.
- Finally, check the windows often for any signs of cracks - particularly after driving down roads with hedgerows that may have scratched the vehicle.
Even if you’re not planning on using your leisure vehicle this winter, make sure that you take a good look at it every few weeks to spot any window cracks before they cause damage, and follow our guide to draining down your vehicle and preparing it for storage.
