With winter almost upon us, it may be time to face the fact that your caravan has had its last adventure of the year. So, as you clear out the furnishings and store the electrics away for another year, don’t forget to complete the all-important caravan drain down.
Why is draining a caravan important?
Have your gutters ever become blocked by frozen rainwater? Perhaps you have even had a water pipe freeze over in your last caravan? Either way, we all know the damage that the freezing temperatures can cause if water is left in an outdoor system over the winter.
With your caravan left unattended over the cold winter months, any water that remains in your systems can freeze, expand, and burst, creating widespread damage that won’t be discovered until spring. To prevent this, we urge all of our customers to drain their caravans and motorhomes over the next few weeks, even if they are kept in a garage or under a cover.
Whilst this might sound as simple as running the taps until there is no more water and disconnecting the pump, there is a lot more to doing this properly. You never really know how much water is left in the system, which is why a drain down kit is needed to remove all the remaining water and leave you with a fully protected leisure vehicle.
Where can I find a caravan drain down kit?
Our Water & Waste collection includes a range of Floe drainage kits to suit all systems, and we also supply the Onboard Water Tank Drainage Kit for vehicles that have an unswitchable onboard water storage tank. So, have you ordered yours yet?
It’s not too late if you haven’t - early November is the perfect time to use your new kit, but you wouldn’t want to leave it much later, so make sure you check out our range and find the right one for your vehicle. Each kit also comes with its own set of instructions on how to safely use the equipment, but if you have any questions or would like some advice from a member of our team, please contact us today.
What other winter preparations should I do?
Whether this is your first winter with your caravan or you have had it for many years, you will already know that this is not the only maintenance task you should have on your list.
As well as investing in the right caravan drain down kit for your vehicle, you should also:
- Disconnect the electric pump and all its fittings and store them in a dry place.
- Attach a hose to the drain tap to direct the water away from the caravan.
- Close all the taps and covers once drained.
- Clean the water heater and system using a descaler.
- Close any doors, windows, and vents to prevent condensation.
