Types of Windows Available
There are two types of windows fitted to Motorhomes:
1) Double-glazed acrylic windows
2) Toughened glass single glazed windows
-
Double-glazed acrylic windows
Comprising of two acrylic plastic panels bonded together, usually with a shaped outer and flat inner pane.
Window styles: Windows can be with or without an external frame although the construction of the double-glazed acrylic window fitted to both are identical. Opening windows normally are hinged from the top.
Fitted to: Caravans and Campervans
Fitted behind the driver’s cab area in the side, door and roof.
Colour/Tint:Available in clear and various tints. Grey tint is the most popular. Bronze tint is fitted to many models built up to 2005 but has been withdrawn as it was found not to be UV stable and this resulted in the bronze tint faded with prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Strength: Acrylic is relatively strong but is susceptible to cracking if it sustains a hard impact to the edge. Cracks cannot be repaired. The surface of acrylic is also susceptible to scratching. -
Toughened glass single glazed windows
Comprising of a single toughened panel usually curved. Unlike acrylic windows toughened windows are not fitted as double-glazed units.
Fitted to: Motorhomes and Campervans in the driver’s cab area and side windows in many Campervans. Toughened windows are not fitted in Caravans or used as side windows in Motorhomes as toughened glass is about twice the weight of acrylic.
Strength: Toughened glass is very strong and will withstand most impacts. However, it can shatter into small glass particles when it experiences a hard impact with a sharp stone or metal implement. Toughened glass windows are very scratch resistant.
Colour/Tint: Available in clear and various tints. Grey and dark privacy tint are the most popular.
